The first professional network specialized in management and finance !
Durham University Investment & Finance Group (DUIFG) is a ratified society of Durham Students' Union. We are one of the largest and fastest growing societies in Durham, and our members come from a broad spectrum of academic backgrounds. Our aim is to educate our members and demystify the world of finance, and we hold events throughout the year to this purpose.
We produce a monthly Market Report, a publication on the financial markets written and edited by our market report editor and his team of analysts, and examples of these can be found on our website.
The DUIFG Investment Fund is another way our members can get involved with the society, and provides the opportunity to run an investment portfolio throughout the academic year. Our fund manager and his fund team are responsible for the portfolio, and this is an area the society aims to expand in the coming year.
The DUIFG is looking forward to a successful 2011/12, and would encourage any member of the university with an interest in finance to get involved in the society.
Sales & Trading is a varied and exciting place to work. The analysts that join the program will need to adapt quickly to keep up and thrive within the fast-paced and often intense environment. The Citi Trading Game is designed to give the participants a feel of the fast pace of the trading floor. The trading game provides the participants with the opportunity to learn valuable skills, while they get a sense of working in Sales and Trading. The winners of the Trading Game Challenge from different universities are then invited to take part in the final which will be held in Citigroup Centre in London.
The Spring Programmes, although branded and formatted differently from institution to institution, are aimed at first year undergraduate students (second year students on a four year course) offering a comprehensive introduction to financial services within the Easter break. They are open to all degree disciplines. The programmes generally consist of a week based in London offering either a unique opportunity to experience many key areas of the differing companies (Investment Banking, Sales Trading & Research, Asset Management, Risk and Technology, Operations, Finance & Business Management) or are focused on offering a more dedicated insight into your specified area of interest.
Internships play an integral part in the recruitment of graduates into investment banks, and give valuable insight into what your future job could be like. They can be seen as a 10 week interview by both parties and are a great opportunity to sample the lifestyle of a career in the City. These opportunities are open to all degree disciplines as well as penultimate year students as well as recent graduates. One thing to consider is whether the placement you are applying for is a Rotational or Placement Internship for the 10 weeks.
On November 4th, the DUIFG took 25 of its members to London for a day of networking and information sessions. The day involved visits to J.P. Morgan, Barclays Capital, Morgan Stanley, and was followed by a dinner with Durham University alumni from the City.
